Drummond Biles
Mechanical Engineering PhD Candidate | University of New Hampshire

ABOUT
Hi! My name is Drummond Biles and I am currently a Doctoral candidate in the department of mechanical engineering at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). I am originally from a town in southern VT and moved to NH to pursue a BS and then a PhD from UNH. I have a strong passion for creative design and exploration through experimentation. I have had the opportunity to develop multiple experiments from pen and paper to physical results. I find great joy in the process of creating both virtually though computer aided engineering systems and physically in a machine/fabrication shop. I work to always get my hands dirty and fully engage myself with any given problem.

In my graduate studies I am pursuing a degree within the field of experimental thermal fluid sciences. My research can be broken down into two complementary investigations; 1) unsteady (time-dependent) forced convection, and 2) internal structures of high Reynolds number (large scale, high speed) turbulent boundary layers. In both of these areas little robust experimental data exists and my goal has been to develop experimental facilities and datasets to fill this gap in knowledge. For more about this work checkout my Graduate Research page!

Through my graduate career I have had the opportunity to teach and mentor students. I have been able to work with grade school students to graduate students and greatly enjoy the rewards of working with students and getting them excited about science and engineering. This has led me to refine my communication skills and have a desire to share my work with others.
Outside of my career I have a passion for movement and the outdoors. I enjoy the ability to get outside and explore the beauty of nature under the power of my own body. Being in southern NH I have great access to the White Mountain National Forest which I try to travel too as often as possible. I also enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures and landscapes.
The purpose of this website is to communicate who I am and the work I have done so far in my career.
Enjoy!
